Dulwich Village – Streets for People Update

Below is a recent and self-explanatory email exchange with Margy Newens – Labour Councillor for the Dulwich Village Ward.

“I am still very concerned about the queues of traffic outside our house on a daily basis – especially at weekends. I am sure that the proposed layout changes to the Dulwich Village / EDG / Village Way / Red Post Hill junction will help matters considerably.

I have just had a look at the Southwark site and the relevant page has not been updated since 7th December 2023 where it states that “We aim to commence construction during summer 2024”.

Can you please establish with the decision makers at the council what is currently happening with this project? Have decisions been made or delayed? Is there an agreed schedule yet?

Any update you can give me would be gratefully received – both for myself and for the members of our Residents’ Association.”

The reply from Margy Newens was as follows:

“Unfortunately, but perhaps understandably, the decision to delay the works to the junction with East Dulwich Grove etc. has been taken on the basis that it would not be feasible to have this running at the same time as the works to the junction with Calton Avenue etc..

The intention remains to proceed with the latter during this summer, although the calling of the General Election has, of course, complicated matters somewhat.

I am still waiting for an update on timings and will share this with you when I have it.

I would like to reassure you that as local councillors we are extremely keen to have both projects completed as soon as possible and will be pressing for this outcome.”

Comments

  1. I can’t see what the General Election has to do with road and pavement works. And the most pressing issue is the lights situation at DV/RPH/EDG/VW.
There is no obvious reason why this shouldn’t come first.

  2. I object to having to go through a councillor in order to understand what is going on to our Dulwich streets in our daily life as too vague and ambiguous. I see other boroughs were able to take off the most unreasonable political decisions from us. Clara
