New Year Message from the Chair

Dear Members of Dulwich Village, College Road, Woodyard lane and the affiliated roads residents’ Association

A belated Happy New Year.

You will have seen the letter the five RAs in the Town Hall Group have sent to Southwark Council. Please do not think the views of those who agree to the Turney Road closure plans are being ignored. We are simply trying to open a dialogue with Southwark which opens up proper consultation for all residents whatever their view.

At the Council pitching meeting this week I made two applications and one other asking for support for my view:

  • Asked for support to have low level lighting from Gail’s Bakery up Dulwich Village and along College Road as far as Bell House. The street lights, hidden by tree canopies, are beyond the verges (the Wastes) and it is very dark and a bit creepy for girls and women in particular to walk that stretch. It seems the Street Lighting department of Highways is already looking at options.
  • Asked for. funding for a painted cycle lane round the entire left hand side perimeter of the road around the George Webster Fountain. This would be for young cyclists to have some extra protection as they push off from stationary and would keep to the extreme left as they go around the island. I have seen too many near misses here and often it looks as if cars will cut up any cyclists thinking they can get through before the cyclist arrives.
  • Asked for funding for a community noticeboard which can be used by RAs, Police Safer Neighbourhood Team, and Councillors and as there are a couple in the area already, at Sainsbury’s (Plough branch) and near the Half Moon, we are lacking that contact centre.

I will find out next month if I have had any luck.

Please get in touch with the RA committee via the website contact form if we can help in any way, also if you wish to join the WhatsApp group.

Best wishes

Bridget Furst
